A.B.I. Neurorehabilitation: The Continuum of Care
Meredith D. Brown, PT, ATP, CBIS is a highly skilled Physical Therapist with extensive experience in neurorehabilitation and pediatrics across clinical, educational, home health, and hospital settings. She also serves as an administrator at Moody Neurorehabilitation Institute, where she plays a key role in staff development focused on acquired brain injury, manages research study projects, and contributes to the development and training of the EMR system.
1.0 CE CreditIt is estimated that 1.7 million Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs) occur every year, and an estimated 3.2 million Americans are living with disability from TBI. Another 795,000+ are affected by strokes each year in the United States. In the last 50 years, a specialized continuum of care has evolved to meet the multiple and complex needs of this population. The approach to brain injury rehabilitation involves adapting treatment to the major impairments at each stage of recovery and preparing the person with brain injury for the next stage of treatment. The overall goal of rehabilitation is to treat medical complications, prevent secondary injuries, improve abilities to engage in activities of daily living, and eventually engage in meaningful societal roles through remediation, compensation, the use of adaptive equipment, and environmental modifications. This presentation focuses on best practices at each stage in the continuum of care that result in favorable treatment outcomes.
OBJECTIVES:
1. Define and explain the prevalence of Acquired Brain Injury in the United States
2. Review the anatomy of the brain and characteristics of each lobe
3. List common effects of an Acquired Brain Injury
4. Discuss the Continuum of Care of neurorehabilitation settings for individuals who have
sustained an Acquired Brain Injury
